Tiny Tree, Trichocaulon bulbosum, is a small, slow-growing caudiciform succulent that resembles a miniature tree. Native to the Western and Eastern Cape Provinces of the Republic of South Africa, this plant has wiry stems that grow up to 30-60cm in height, forming a rounded shrub. It has small, cylindrical, grey-green leaves that feature a white bristle crown, hence the name “trichocaulon” meaning “hairy stem”. The plant produces stunning violet to purple-red flowers with a yellow center.

Tiny Tree is perfect for growing in a well-drained pot indoors or outdoors. It thrives in partial shade and is fairly heat and sun tolerant. During the warmer months, it requires regular watering, but it’s important to allow the soil to dry between watering to avoid overwatering. In winter, it’s best to water the plant less frequently. Its impressive fat caudex adds to its appeal and is a popular choice for bonsai enthusiasts.
