Native to Africa (Madagascar, Tanzania and Kenya) as well as southern Asia, this popular “Snake Plant” is one of about 70 species in its family, which range from desert succulents to tropical cacti. A perennial evergreen usually used as an ornamental, it has chunky, long (up to 50cm), almost cylindrical leaves that are grooved on top and coloured grey to brownish-green with pale flecking. They also feature attractive green banding and reddish papery margins and have been compared to appearing like tusks emerging from the ground. Flowers are showy and white, clustering on spikes.

Low-growing, it will form dense clumps arranged in a rosette around the growing plant. With a slow growth rate, this plant is suitable as a houseplant in planters, flowerpots or other containers. Provide a position of full sun to half shade (or full shade with grow lights) and give only small amounts of water.
