This perennial cactus is native to Bolivia and Argentina, one of about 28 species of these slim columnar desert cacti. A distinctive erect cactus with grey-green columns, it is a fast growing, showy plant, with striking silvery-blue spines adding to its visual appeal.

Suited for a large landscape, or a container plant if some height is needed, it works well in combination with other columnar cacti and succulents. Very versatile, it can form an accent in foundations, raised planters, courtyards or other confined spaces. Being drought tolerant it is very well suited to the waterwise garden or rockeries.

An easy to grow plant as long as it is not over-watered—it likes to be kept dry over winter. Provide as much sunlight as possible, and free-draining soil.

Common names include: Silver Torch Cactus, Woody Torch, Snow Pole, Silver Torch.
