A popular houseplant, this bulbous perennial succulent hails from South Africa where it grows in thick clusters. A small upright grower reaching only a maximum height of about 15cm, it features teardrop-shaped bulbs that usually are entirely above the ground, and attractive, variegated foliage. Fleshy, stalkless, lance-shaped leaves are mottled in silvery blotches and banded with olive green on the upper surface, while being intense violet underneath. Flower clusters on delicate pink stalks will bloom with tiny green flowers edged in white.

This evergreen is a classic home or garden plant and requires only minimal care, making it perfect for beginners. It needs bright light indoors–at least four hours of direct sunlight daily—so is perfect for the windowsill. Water moderately. Common names include: Silver Squill, Wood Hyacinth, Bluebell, South African Scilla, Leopard Lily, Violet Squill. Note: All parts of plant are poisonous if ingested.
