The Sansevieria Boncellensis, also known as the Sansevieria Starfish, is a stunning evergreen perennial succulent that produces clumps of short, thick spear-like stems with solid tips. This succulent, belonging to the mother-in-law’s tongue family, is visually appealing with its smooth green stems and silvery mottled or stripey markings.
This hardy succulent is perfect for those who want a low-maintenance houseplant that can also purify the air. The Sansevieria Boncellensis can be kept bare rooted in a vase of water and rocks for stability, making it an easy-to-care-for option. While they typically do not flower easily when kept this way, mature plants will produce tall flower stalks with clusters of green-white tubular flowers with slight pink tones, which are pleasantly fragrant and have been likened to orchid flowers.
The Sansevieria Boncellensis is a rare dwarf variety of the African spear, with slow growth that only reaches up to 30cm in diameter and has a clumping behavior. This succulent looks great all year round and can adapt and thrive in most positions, from part sun to indoors. It is an extremely hardy plant that can be kept outdoors in the garden, but is also known as a very good house or office plant.
For the Sansevieria Boncellensis to thrive, it should be kept in a well-drained position and allowed to dry out completely between deep watering. If kept indoors in a vase with rocks, top up water whenever it has dried up or running low. If kept outdoors in the weather, this plant will require no maintenance except occasional watering during droughts. The best part about this ornamental succulent is that it thrives on being ignored, making it a perfect choice for those who want a striking plant that requires minimal effort to maintain.
