Gasterias are a group of South African succulents closely related to aloes and Haworthias and all now classified in the asphodel family, a breakout from the bulging lily family. An easy-to-grow succulent native to South Africa, gasterias are tough and easy care, making them the ideal beginner’s plant. Short, rigid leaves shaped like an ox tongue are covered in white spots with a sandpapery texture. Flowers are pink and give Gasterias their name, deriving from the Latin word for stomach and referring to the inflated, stomach-like pouch shape of the blooms.

Easy to care houseplants that can even survive a dimly lit bedroom, provided they are grown in well-drained cactus soil and not over-watered. Plants can be moved outside in summer to a bright, shaded spot.
