Native to South Africa and commonly called “Purple Sand Rose”, this freely branching leaf succulent forms mats around 60cm wide out of spiralling rosettes. Leaves are narrow, pointed and olive green on top, purplish underneath. When the plant is stressed, the green turns to red. Stems are covered in white hairs which contrast wonderfully with the foliage and flowers bloom in pink.

This slow-growing, small perennial makes a neat, compact subject for container planting but also looks good in raised beds or as filler in rock gardens. Ensure a gritty, well-drained soil, and a position in the garden which gets more than four hours of sun, or in a brightly lit room. This plant is sensitive to over-watering and likes to be kept dry in winter.
