Cleistocactus, commonly referred to as the “Old Man Cactus,” is a genus of columnar cacti known for its distinctive appearance. The plant’s elongated stems are covered with dense, white, hair-like spines, giving it an appearance reminiscent of an old man’s beard. This unique feature not only adds to its aesthetic appeal but also helps protect the plant from intense sunlight.

Native to the high mountain regions of South America, Cleistocactus thrives in arid environments and well-drained soil. It prefers full sun and can tolerate drought, making it a popular choice for low-maintenance gardens and indoor cultivation.

The Old Man Cactus is often grown for ornamental purposes, appreciated for its striking appearance and unique texture. While it’s generally considered safe, handling the plant with care is advised, as the spines can be sharp and may cause irritation if they come into contact with the skin.
