Native to the southern and central European mountains from the Carpathians to the Pyrenees, these alpine succulents are cushion or mat-forming, with clusters of tight rosettes up to 7.5cm wide. Leaves are medium-green, fleshy, sharp-pointed and have a fuzzy texture, while flowers are reddish-purple and star-shaped, rising on 20cm tall stalks.

Easy to grow, these Sempervivum earnt their common name “Houseleeks” because they are willing to take root in roofs. However, they are also perfect for rockeries or in containers outside. As they enjoy full sunshine, they make a great subject for a cold window. Avoid excessive watering and keep in well-drained soil (rocky or gritty is best).
