This low maintenance houseplant is a fairly fast-growing perennial succulent shrub which is a subspecies of the South African native Portulacaria afra. A gorgeous semi-evergreen, it forms upright multi-stemmed shrubs that can grow very tall in nature, but are smaller in cultivation. Fleshy, flattish, round to oval leaves are glossy emerald green and it produces an abundance of tiny, inconspicuous pink and white star-shaped flowers.

A very popular seasonal accent plant, it creates a wonderful green backdrop or foundation plant in succulent gardens and bonsai arrangements. Low maintenance save for requiring clipping into shape from time to time, it has very good heat tolerance, is fire resistant, and is easily grown in shade to full sun with minimal watering. Its foliage is edible and is used locally in salads or soups to add a sour flavour. It also has traditional medicinal uses.
