An ornamental evergreen perennial shrub whose fantastic variegated foliage consists of upright, long, sword-shaped leaves with waxy margins, giving an overall appearance of a fountain of undulating ribbons. Its soft leaves are luminous green and it blooms with strongly scented cream-white to green flowers which attract bees. An attractive, exotic looking landscaping element that creates a dramatic focal point, it will reach a height of around 1.5m and 2m wide.

Fairly easy care, being heat, humidity and drought tolerant. It needs a rich, well-drained soil, infrequent watering and a position in filtered light where it is protected from sun scorching. An ideal plant for a sunny window spot, it is a manageable size for container planting, but also does very well as an accent plant in borders and beds. Native to the Caribbean and northern South America, where its natural fique fibres are used in textiles, this plant has the common names Giant Cabuya and Mauritius Hemp.
