The Crown of Thorns spurge is a slow-growing, rambling shrub growing up to a metre tall. It has slim, fleshy, bright green stems adorned with thorns and clusters of little elliptical green leaves. Flowers are small, but are enveloped by pairs of kidney-shaped bright red bracts that look like petals.

Native to Madagascar, this plant is perfect for a flowering garden or desert garden, but also works well in containers. Place in full sun to bright shade, water minimally and never allow to stand in water. Supposedly the plant used to make Jesus Christ’s crown of thorns.

NOTE: Euphorbia’s are for ornamental purposes only. The milky sap can be toxic and can cause adverse reactions if it comes into contact with the skin or eyes. Do not ingest. Euphorbias do not typically require pruning or maintenance, but take care when handling.
