One of the species of evergreen Madagascan spurges which is regarded as being the “true” Crown of Thorns, which legend has it is the plant from which Jesus Christ’s crown of thorns was made. With bright green, leathery foliage and grey stems, its vivid red flowers bloom all year but are most showy in the springtime.
Makes a beautiful potted plant but is also valued for its burst of colour when planted in beds and borders in the garden. A very easy care plant, it needs only minimal water and well-drained soil, and will thrive in full sun to part shade. Note: The latex sap of all euphorbias is an irritant to skin and eyes, so handle with care. The plant is also poisonous if ingested, so keep away from pets and children.
NOTE: Euphorbia’s are for ornamental purposes only. The milky sap can be toxic and can cause adverse reactions if it comes into contact with the skin or eyes. Do not ingest. Euphorbias do not typically require pruning or maintenance, but take care when handling.
