This succulent is related to the aloe family and is native to the western cape of South Africa where tribal beliefs ascribe it magical healing properties. It is a stemless succulent grown mainly for its attractive foliage, being deep green, fleshy, tongue-like “distichous” leaves (arranged in opposing pairs to form a fan). Shallow rooted and growing in clusters, this variety has an orange bloom featuring edible flowers that are bean-like in flavour.

While a slow grower, it is a hardy houseplant which can thrive even in low light conditions, and is perfect for windowsills or verandahs, or as part of miniature succulent gardens or arid terrariums.
