This is a low-growing stemless succulent growing 9-23cm tall and 7-23cm wide. Native to South Africa, the name “beestong” comes from the Afrikaans word for cattle tongue and describes the appearance of the leaf of this plant. Similar to aloe, this succulent has smooth fleshy leaves in two opposite rows, and leaves can have white spots in bands or placed randomly. Pretty fans of leaves can form due to the plant’s propensity to branch at its base. Flowers are pinkish salmon-red coloured.

Beestong thrives in cultivation and is regarded as a relatively fast-growing plant. It doesn’t need a lot of space, making it ideal as a container plant. Grows happily in a shallow 10cm pot for years! Provide it with light shade to shade, but it can take full sun for part of the day. Avoid over-watering.
