A highly collectible variety of succulent “bonsai”, this distinctive plant is listed as critically endangered in the wild but is increasingly popular with cactophiles and bonsai growers. A dwarf, cushion-forming succulent featuring rosettes of snaky stems arising out of a short caudex, its leaves are dark reddish-brown and fleshy. From its original habitat in Madagascan thorn forests, it is now widely regarded as a curiosity due to its unusual appearance (described sometimes as a beached octopus).

This miniature Euphorbia is a very slow grower but that also means it won’t outgrow its space quickly. Place in a well-drained bonsai pot and give an airy potting mix, as well as regular watering in the growing season. It has excellent heat tolerance and grows well in very bright light so it loves life on the verandah in the summertime.

NOTE: Euphorbia’s are for ornamental purposes only. The milky sap can be toxic and can cause adverse reactions if it comes into contact with the skin or eyes. Do not ingest. Euphorbias do not typically require pruning or maintenance, but take care when handling.
