A trailing cactus, native to the jungles of Argentina and Brazil, Lepismium cruciform is known for its remarkable colour, an olive green that blushes to a deep magenta when the plant is stressed, which can be achieved by adjusting heat, water or nutrients. A unique looking succulent, it has long, twisting spider-like explosions of leaves and produces 10cm white flowers from its little nodules. The stems can reach 4 feet or more.

This plant looks striking in a flat-backed pot against a backdrop of a light coloured wall or can be incorporated into a potted composition in a hanging basket as a cascading element. Thriving in coastal gardens, it likes dappled shade and warm temperatures. Water regularly and give regular potting soil provided it drains well.
